Halloween Homework Update

First of all, let me wish you a Happy Halloween! :) I have missed you all this week, and I hope you had a wonderful Fall Break!

Homework for the next two weeks will be a little different for two reasons: (#1) We will not have school this Friday, and (#2) we have a field trip next Friday!

So here's what you can expect:

We will have a spelling pretest this Monday, but we won't test on them until next Thursday! This will give you plenty of time to study even though we have Halloween this week (when you know you won't have time for homework!) + this Friday off.
I will be assigning a Science Menu this week. You will have two weeks to complete the menu items, and they will be due on Monday, November 14th.
I will have individual packets for many of you based on the goals we set for you at Parent Conferences. If I didn't have a conference with you, we will be setting goals shortly.

So that's what you can expect for homework in the next two weeks! I'm excited to get back to learning again! See you Monday!

The two assignments you should see written in red ink are (1) spelling packet due Friday and (2) read for 30 minutes.

Tonight, after your child has completed his or her homework, please take a moment to write the name of the book your child read for homework and then sign your name at the bottom of today's section in the agenda.

Tennessee Project!

Enchanted Learning (This site has most of the "facts" you will need for your book.)

Love Our World!

In conjunction with Valentine's Day, and in honor of those who are suffering in our world, today we are launching our "Love Our World" campaign!

Here are the causes we can choose from. Take a look at each of them and let me know your thoughts! We will decide on one to support next week!

1. Pennies for Peace

See the video here.

To us, a penny is almost worthless. But to a child in Afghanistan or Pakistan, a penny can buy a pencil, opening the door to literacy! If we choose this cause to support, we will collect pennies around the school and then send the money we raise to Pennies for Peace. They will use the money to build a school in Afghanistan or Pakistan that will help the children there learn to read and write!

2. African Library Project

1,000 books + $500 is all it takes to start a library in Africa! If we choose this cause to support, our goal would be to collect 1,000 books and $500. Once we collect the proper amount, we will ship the books and money to the African Library Project, where they will start a library so the children there can learn to read and enjoy the same stories we love here in Mrs. Stone's class!

3. American Cancer Society

This is the cause we support as a school system when we raise money for Relay for Life each year. Even though it doesn't have to do with reading and writing like the other two causes, it is very important to us! Some of our friends in class this year are dealing with cancer in their families, and we have learned that it is important to raise money to try and find a cure for this terrible disease.

If we choose this cause, we will design a fundraiser to raise money to send to the American Cancer Society. We also would organize a class walking hour at this year's Relay for Life (May 6th and 7th, downtown Cleveland), so we could walk together to support the friends and family we have who have been affected by cancer.

So...As you can see, we have many options to talk about! Talk to your families about our ideas, show them the videos, and be prepared to vote for your choice next week!

Groundhog Day!

Yesterday was Groundhog Day, and that silly Punxatawny Phil saw his shadow! I don't know about you, but I don't want six more weeks of winter! I am ready for spring! We will just have to wait and see if the groundhog's prediction is right or wrong.

Scholastic Book Order

Hi there!

Today in class, I handed out this month's Scholastic Book Order forms. The orders are due by next Tuesday, January 26th.

I want to remind you that if you order online, our class will receive one free book for every online order placed! Awesome! You may also order the traditional way, by sending the order form and money in to me. (No free books, but it still works!)

Banana Hunt!

In math class, we have begun studying angles! We measured some rubber-band angles today using protractors. Click on the "Banana Hunt" title above to play the fun monkey game and become a pro at measuring angles!

Study Island

We are starting a new program here at Ross called "Study Island." If you have middle schoolers, you probably have heard of this program before. They have been using it at Cleveland Middle for a little while and really like it.

Study Island is an online learning tool that can be accessed anywhere there is an internet connection. Your child has a unique log-in and password. Once you enter the site (http://www.studyisland.com/) you will find several options.

Follow the directions below to find our 4th grade material.

1. Type http://www.studyisland.com/ into your browser.

2. Your child's username is his or her first and last name followed by @ross (example: stephaniestone@ross). The students were all assigned 12345 as their password. If your child has not logged on to the site before, this will be his or her current password. The next screen will ask your child to change his or her password. This should be changed to his or her student number (used for lunch accounts, AR, SuccessMaker, etc.). (***At the bottom of this screen, it will ask for an email address. Leave this blank.) If your child has already changed the password at school, that is fine. Just use his or her number to log-in as usual.

3. Once logged in, choose "4th grade" from the options on the left.

4. On the next screen, select "Math", "Reading/LA", "Science", or "Social Studies".

5. If this is your first time visiting your chosen subject area, it will require that you take a pretest before unlocking the rest of the content. Select "Pretest" and start exploring!

6. Once you have unlocked the content, you may choose your topic by clicking on the name (example: Nouns, Verbs, and Adjectives).

7. Then, under session type, choose "test mode" or "games." At home, you may also choose "printable worksheet" to do a paper/pencil version!
